1st Agrifood Systems Analytics Data Science Workshop

For three Mondays, there were 24 (11 females, 13 Males) participants who completed the 1st Agrifood Systems Data Science Workshop organized by the Agrifood Systems Analytics Laboratory. This activity was made possible with support from the UP Strategic Research (UPSTREAM) Foundation, Inc., College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), School of Management (SOM), and Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR).
Other partners were projects and student organizations of the university. These were the AI-Based Non-Invasive Grading System for Durian (AIDurian) - DOST iCRADLE Project, UP Mindanao League of DOST Scholars (UPMin LeaDS), UP Mindanao The Society of Programmers and Refined Computer Scientists (SPARCS), Society of Agribusiness Economists (SoABE), Society of Math Majors (SMM), and Philippine Association of Food Technologists, Inc. - Lambda Chapter (PAFT-λ).
The workshop was a combination of lecture and exercises. There were 9 topics which were chosen to introduce the participants to the applications of data science in agrifood system.

Day 1: 11 September 2023
The workshop was opened by Dr. Cinmayii Manliguez, Chair of the Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science (DMPCS) of the College of Science and Mathematics.
School of Management Adjunct faculty Mr. Luis Antonio Hualda and principal investigator of the Harvest for Health project provided presented the Topic 1 on Data Science and Agrifood Systems while DMPCS Associate Professor Vlademir Kobayashi conducted a lecture and hands-on activities on Topic 2: Data Management and Preprocessing and Topic 3: Data exploration and visualization.
The event was also attended by UPSTREAM President Dr. Sylvia B. Concepcion.
Day 2: 18 September 2023
The second day started with discussions and sharing with the participants on Topic 4: Data Science for social impact, facilitated by University Researcher Marilou Montiflor. It was followed by lecture/workshop on Topic 5: Applied Machine Learning (Text data) and Topic 6: Applied Machine Learning (unsupervised) provided by DMPCS Associate Professor Valdemir Kobayashi.
Day 3: 25 September 2023
The last day were lectures on Topic 7: Food Technology and Crop Science by Department of Food Science and Chemistry Associate Professor Jackie Lou Tagubase and Topic 8: Deep Learning Techniques for Computer Vision by DMPCS Assistant Professor Armacheska Mesa-Satina. The 3-day workshop ended with Topic 9: Multicriteria decision making presented by DMPCS Associate Professor Vlademic Kobayashi.
